How to avoid those do-it-yourself legal errors
In the do-it-yourself world of today’s fast-paced society, many consumers have been pressured into making poor judgments in purchasing and have faced long-term consequences for a quick legal decision.
Here's some insight into 10 common legal mistakes consumers often make:
- Not getting an inspection when purchasing a home or used auto. If a seller won’t allow an inspection conducted by an independent third party, don't buy the house or auto.
- Assuming someone doing contract labor in a home has a license bonded with the state. Always ask to see a contractor's license.
- Assuming contractors have workers compensation insurance. If a contractor doesn’t have workers compensation insurance, the homeowner may be liable if an injury occurs.
- Accepting verbal contracts.
- Paying too much to repair shops. Repair shops are required to furnish the customer with a written estimate of the cost of parts and labor. If the repair shop fixes more than you consented to have fixed, you may not have to pay the entire bill.
- Signing a lease without a thorough understanding of its terms.
- Not having a Will.
- Buying a rental car or lost luggage insurance without doing research. Rental cars are often covered on a consumer's auto insurance policy, and lost luggage may be covered by a homeowner's policy.
- Allowing insurance companies to force a settlement. If you believe an insurance company has not offered you a fair settlement, try to negotiate. If that doesn't work , contact an attorney.
- Not knowing when to consult an attorney. When a situation becomes too complicated or serious, or if you feel you are being treated unfairly, contact an attorney.
